Can the Amazon Bioeconomy Attract More Climate Finance?

Its forests play an essential role in regulating rainfall patterns, absorbing carbon, and preserving global biodiversity. According to Santos and Moraes (2025), “its biodiversity is linked to a complex and unique ecosystem, in addition to containing vast mineral reserves and one-third of the world’s tropical rainforest reserves.” Since the colonial period, the region has been contested by various public and private actors, highlighting its strategic and economic importance throughout history. Against this backdrop, a fundamental question has emerged at the center of current debates on sustainable development in the region: Is it possible to transform the conservation of the Amazon rainforest into a genuine economic opportunity capable of generating income, promoting social inclusion, and simultaneously preserving the integrity of the biome? This question has become increasingly relevant given the historical pressure placed on the Amazon’s natural resources and the urgent need for development alternatives that do not rely on environmental degradation to foster economic growth. In this context, the bioeconomy has emerged as a strategic solution. According to Conceição (2025), “the bioeconomy can be understood as a development model based on the sustainable use of biodiversity and renewable biological resources, aimed at creating integrated economic, social, and environmental value.” Similarly, Gomes Benevenuto et al. (2025) argue that the bioeconomy in the Amazon biome requires understanding and valuing the region’s unique social, cultural, environmental, economic, and political characteristics so that development strategies are designed according to its specific challenges and opportunities. Beyond the bioeconomy itself, forest conservation has increasingly become an important instrument for reconciling economic development with environmental protection in the Amazon. For many years, forests were often perceived as barriers to economic growth, making their conversion into conventional productive activities seem inevitable. However, this perspective has gradually shifted as new initiatives recognize the economic value of standing forests. In this regard, mechanisms such as carbon projects, payments for ecosystem services (PES), and sustainable forest management have created opportunities to attract climate finance dedicated to preserving natural resources. In conclusion, the Amazon bioeconomy has significant potential to attract climate finance because it is grounded in the sustainable use of biodiversity, the conservation of natural resources, and the promotion of regional socioeconomic development. By combining income generation, social inclusion, and environmental conservation, the bioeconomy aligns closely with the objectives pursued by climate investors and funding institutions. Furthermore, initiatives involving forest conservation, carbon projects, and sustainable innovation expand the region’s opportunities to mobilize climate-related investments. Therefore, the bioeconomy represents not only a viable development pathway for the Amazon but also a strategic instrument for attracting climate finance and reinforcing the economic value of keeping the forest standing.
